History
The story behind The Blue Jasmine
2000s
Japan gifts the trains to Thailand
After years of service in Japan, the iconic blue sleeper trains found a new home in Thailand. Through a gesture of friendship, the Japanese government donated several of these retired carriages, where they were refurbished and adapted for Thai railways.

2023
Start of The Blue Jasmine
The idea of the Blue Jasmine was born from a wish to reintroduce a more mindful way of travelling, where time, comfort and connection matter again. What began as a simple concept soon turned into the first concrete steps of the project, with early designs and plans shaping a new kind of rail experience in Thailand.

2025
Maiden Journey
The Blue Jasmine project was officially introduced in 2025, marking a new chapter in Thailand’s rail travel with a focus on comfort and thoughtful design.

1950s
The Beginning
In post-war Japan, the dream of comfortable long-distance travel began to take shape. By the mid-1950s, this vision became reality with the launch of the Asakaze, the first Blue Train. Connecting Tokyo and Hakata, it offered travellers an overnight escape filled with comfort, elegance, and the promise of a new era on rails.

1958
Comfort Upgrade
Just a few years after the first Blue Train launched, Japan introduced air-conditioned sleeper cars — a luxury at the time. This innovation made overnight travel even more comfortable and helped turn the Blue Trains into a beloved symbol of modern Japan.

1970s
Golden Era
The 1970s marked the height of the Blue Trains’ popularity. Often called “moving hotels”, they offered a unique blend of comfort and adventure, connecting Japan’s major cities overnight. The trains appeared in novels, films, and songs, becoming icons of romance, nostalgia, and the golden age of Japanese travel.

2000s
Decline
As air travel, buses, and the Shinkansen became faster and more affordable, the Blue Trains began to lose passengers. Many classic routes saw decreasing demand, and the once-glamorous overnight journeys started to fade from Japan’s modern landscape.
